Your Hearing Test – What to expect

Booking a hearing test with Amplify is easy and stress-free. Whether it’s your first hearing test or your annual check-up, our experienced audiologists are here to guide you through the process.

  • First, we’ll get to know you and discuss your concerns.
  • Next, we’ll check your ears and test your hearing.
  • We’ll explain your results and advise you on your options.
  • We can demonstrate available hearing solutions and help you decide which is best for you.

The non-invasive and painless hearing test typically takes about an hour and simply requires your focus to hear quiet sounds. And apart from listening, that’s about as hard as it gets!

Who can get a hearing test?

Anyone aged over 18 can get a hearing test, and if you’re aged 55 or over, you’re entitled to a FREE hearing loss test and healthcare check. This is because hearing loss is largely, but not always, age related. We recommend that you get your hearing checked every year. You can book your hearing test without a GP or ENT referral.

Looking for a hearing test near you? We have over 300 local practices, so you can find a hearing test to suit your needs.

Getting to know you

When you book a hearing test with your audiologist, they will conduct a step-by-step evaluation of your hearing loss health, address any worries you may have, and receive answers to questions about hearing solutions.

Your audiologist will take into consideration your hearing concerns and determine the best hearing solutions to improve your hearing. If you wish, bring a family member or friend to support you during your hearing loss test.

Checking your ears

During your hearing test,  your audiologist will carry out a thorough evaluation of your ear health.

They’ll use an otoscope to examine the inside of your ears, searching for any blockages, earwax buildup, or infections that might be impacting your hearing. If any issues are detected, your audiologist will refer you to a GP for further investigation.

Testing your hearing

To assess if you’re experiencing any hearing loss, an audiologist will examine your hearing ability. During the hearing test, your audiologist will provide you with headphones and play a series of sounds.

All you need to do is press a button every time you hear a sound, giving your audiologist an understanding of your ability to hear different sound levels and pitches. The test will also include listening to words and sounds at varying volumes, pitches, and intensities, simulating everyday conversation.

You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to the hearing test, as their familiar voice can assist in evaluating your speech understanding.

Talking through your results

Once your hearing test is complete, your audiologist will share the results with you by showing you an audiogram – a graph that plots your hearing. The audiogram will show you whether you have any hearing loss, and if you do, the level of loss, which can be mild, moderate, severe or profound.

If, after conducting a thorough hearing test and hearing health check, our audiologist finds you are suffering from hearing loss, we can help you choose the best hearing aid solution or treatment for you. Our Audiologist will make recommendations from all the leading brands, based on your individual hearing loss, your lifestyle, technology needs and your budget.

Once you’ve decided which hearing aid suits you best, we will book you in for a fitting appointment, usually within 2 weeks, to fit your personalised hearing aid, including custom-made models, and talk through your rehabilitation and how to get the best from your new hearing device.
